I started reflecting on what I’ve bought (so far) this year, and of them what has made my life easier. From spending late nights searching on Amazon (because let’s be honest, Amazon has everything); to scrolling through my favorite shopping websites while looking for beauty products, denim shorts, and sandals. As I was sitting at brunch the other day, chatting with friends and the topic of new purchases came up these are the products that came to mind because they’ve given me value or happiness, or both. Here are my 10 best purchases of 2019 that I recommend to my friends over and over again.
I haven’t owned a scale since I moved to L.A. eight years ago, but recently I was talking with a friend who told me about a Bluetooth scale—something I had never heard of before. She explained how it connects to an app on your phone and can read a lot more than just your weight. I searched on Amazon for the most affordable, combined with the best reviews, and that led me to Arboleaf's Bluetooth Smart Scale.
It was delivered super-fast and was easy to set up—I popped in the batteries that came with it, downloaded the app, and stepped on. This scale measures your weight (obviously), but also measures your BMI and BMR, body fat percentage, visceral fat, body water percentage, muscle mass, bone mass, metabolic age, and it also lets you know your body type. Each time you step on it sends all the data to your phone where you can track your progress with graphs and it connects to Apple Health and FitBit.
When I was making a list of must have travel shoes, I came across these blue glitter holographic wedges by Kurt Geiger. I’m shoe-obsessed but these take that obsession to a whole new level. I searched and searched for my size and found the last pair of 7.5s on 6pm. Before they arrived, I prayed they would fit (I read they ran on the smaller side), and I visualized everything I could wear them with. Luckily they fit perfectly and they tie for my all-time favorite shoe (along with my Golden Goose kicks). I haven’t worn them yet, but it’s safe to say they’ll be on my feet all summer long.
- Dillards and 6pm have the blue holographic glitter version in a few smaller sizes.
- KurtGeiger.com has a few of these beauties still available in UK sizes 2 and 9; they also have a blush and gold glitter version.
- Zappos has an all blush glitter version.
- Nordstrom and Dillards have a black and gold embellished pair.
I started using the Blue Tansy Resurfacing Mask when my old mask was discontinued. I heard so many wonderful things about Herbivore Botanicals but this was the first product of theirs I tried. I’m always skeptical of putting anything new on my face for fear of breaking out. What convinced me to try this was reading how all their products are made with organic, food-grade ingredients. They contain things like minerals, essential vitamins, and botanicals that are extracted from Brazilian gemstones and French pink clay.
First, the mask smelled amazing, and I loved the smooth texture and translucent blue shade. Like the directions said, I applied it to my face three days in a row (for about 20 minutes) and then began using it every other day. Second, I noticed my complexion was smoother and brighter, and any redness had disappeared. This mask is now a part of my daily beauty regimen.
I was looking for a backpack to replace my black leather one that I had put through the ringer. I needed something with a padded area to insert my laptop for when I travel. Right before I left for Arizona I found this baby blue and pastel pink floral one by Ban.do. It has plenty of room to store all my travel essentials (laptop, passport, wallet, a book, snacks, makeup, and headphones), but it’s not too bulky. After I ordered it I realized that it matched my Ban.do planner.
I split my workouts between the gym in my apartment building, and a local gym down the street. Because the one in my apartment doesn’t have a lot of equipment, I had to learn to improvise. Over the years I’ve bought a ton of accessories to use but none have worked as well as these adjustable ankle straps. I attach them to the cable machine and use them for donkey kicks, leg curls, kneeling cable pull through, standing and kneeling cable hip abductions, and cable side steps. These exercises really work your glutes and butt—and if you’re interested in learning, here’s a video that will help you get started. The best part—they can easily fit into my gym bag so I can take them with me when I travel.
There’s no debating the ‘90s were the best decade; it gave us Clueless, Beverly Hills 90210, dial up Internet—(remember AOL group chats?), Nirvana, rollerblades, ripped jeans, Airheads, Biggie and 2Pac, American Psycho, and tons of good times with friends minus Smartphones and all the technology we have today. When I was in Urban Outfitters, I came across That’s So ‘90s! By Jo Stewart + Totally ‘90s Trivia Cards and had to purchase them. The book will make a great beach read when I head to Venice or Santa Monica this summer, and I can’t wait to play the card game with friends, while drinking ‘90s themed cocktails.
I’ve been contemplating on getting lash extensions for quite some time now, but then I came across Charlotte Tilbury Fat Lashes 5 Star Mascara. After trying so many mascaras (from drugstore finds to really expensive) I can say this one is the b-e-s-t! It goes on smoothly and adds dimension without causing clumpiness or weighing my lashes down.
I was looking for a “diet” pill that wouldn’t be harmful to my body. Already being a huge fan of Hum Nutrition, I decided to try their Ripped Rooster fat-burner supplement. I started about 3 weeks ago and I already notice a difference. This one has only three ingredients; 7-Keto, Chromium, and Green Tea. I take one pill two times a day with food and have increased energy and I’m losing weight, yet I’m still eating and working out the same as before. Use this code (1C5339) to get $10 off any bottle of Hum Nutrition. PS: Always consult with your doctor before taking a new supplement.
When it comes to summer, me and denim shorts go hand in hand. I’ve lost count of the cutoffs I own but these One Teaspoon Bandit Shorts are my favorite. Before I left for Arizona, I purchased them and I’ve been living in them ever since. They’re super comfortable (unlike a lot of denim), the cut is flattering, and I love the deconstructed vintage feel.
I was at the dentist a few weeks ago and inquired about teeth whitening. I have veneers on my top teeth but I felt like they weren’t as white as they once were. Veneers can’t change color, nor can they be bleached, but my dentist explained that I could still whiten them by bleaching the back of my teeth. She suggested Opalescence Teeth Whitening Syringes in 15% which used to be available in dentist offices only, but now it’s sold on Amazon.
Each syringe has enough bleaching gel for one application, and comes in a pack of four. I already have the trays so I dab a dot of gel along the upper and bottom, and pop them in my mouth for an hour every other day. I’m on my fourth application and see a huge difference. I’ll probably buy enough for one more round, but I saved a ton of money by doing it myself rather than having it done in the office. Here’s the complete kit with the syringes and trays.
